Tell us a little about your current role and what you enjoy most about it?

My role is to help business leaders to align the business agenda ánd the people agenda. I have a background in Sales, Recruitment, General Management and HR. I did a study during my years in a large employment services firm on the alignment in Culture and Retention. In the role of HRBP this experience comes together in understanding business needs and translating these into HR objectives. What I really love about my job is that every day brings something new to the table.

What are you most proud of in your life - career, accomplishments, etc.?

I’m very proud of my family who inspire me to evolve and be courageous. Also my parents make me proud, having had a black father who came in the early sixties from Surinam to The Netherlands to create a better life for himself. My mum, a very Dutch blue eyed blond haired woman was open-minded enough to marry him and teaching me and my two older brothers to work hard, be kind, have an open mind and try to understand the other while still sticking to your values.

Is there a specific black role model from history who inspires you? What about a black person from today?

There’s less writing about black (female) role models. Having a 12-year-old daughter, my husband and I try to seek female role models, like Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, or Mae C.Jemison who was the first Afro American woman in space. These are women who had courage to pursue their life ambitions even when it was very difficult. Courageous people are very inspiring, and courage is something that can come in the smallest of packages and give great outcomes.

How do you celebrate your heritage?

Celebrating my heritage is also about stories, food and music. I come from a blend of Dutch and Surinam heritage. That gives agility.
