Teledyne Brown Wins FAA Contract For Surface Observation System
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (August 20, 2002)-The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Teledyne Brown Engineering a contract with a potential value of $1.68 million to replace components of its Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS).
The ASOS includes sensors mounted on towers that collect, compute, and disseminate weather data to help pilots and flight controllers prepare and monitor weather forecasts, develop flight plans, and better utilize information for proper takeoffs and landings. These sensors also provide a minute-by-minute update of weather conditions at airports and other sites throughout the U.S.
Teledyne Brown will manage a team of contractors that will procure and install replacement wind-speed and wind-direction towers and procure additional replacement equipment as needed.
The FAA has ordered 60 towers and could order as many as 125 towers, for a total value in excess of $1.68 million. The contract performance period is for one year, and the FAA may exercise four one-year options, extending the contract through September 2007. Additionally, the FAA may procure other replacement equipment, such as radios, processing boards, visibility sensors, and barometric-pressure sensors, for installation by FAA personnel. The contract is issued through the FAA's Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., and will be managed by Teledyne Brown personnel in Oklahoma City.
"This is another example of Teledyne Brown's diverse program management and engineering talents," said James M. Link, president of Teledyne Brown. "This award presents a new and exciting opportunity for our company, one we're eager to begin in conjunction with another great partner, the FAA."
